Magpies demolish Tigers to start season on top
Tuesday, 29 April 2003
North Whyalla have started the season on top of the ladder, after demolishing Weeroona Bay by 75 points on Saturday.
After a disappointing West End Cup series, North showed they will to be a force to contend with in the league season, with ball-winners all over the ground.
The first quarter was evenly played out, with North kicking three quick goals in time on to give them a four-goal buffer at quarter time.
From then on it was a white wash, North players all over Weeroona Bay in all areas of the ground.
New recruit Chad Menzies was a stand out for Norths, with a best on ground performance going to David Hart.
Gilbert and Kevin Taylor's first game for their new club was also a good one, showing fine form in patches.
Weeroona Bay were clearly underdone in comparison to their counterparts, lacking in form and fitness from an average pre-season.
North coach Daryl Spencer said based on last year's matches, he expected the game to be very competitive and was more than happy to get a win on the board to start the season.
Best players for Norths were Hart, Menzies, Aaron Priess, Sumner and Rodgers, with Warner the leading goal kicker for the game, booting four.
Spencer said his team will take the season as it comes, but are looking forward to a good year.
"We are looking to maintain last years effort of improvement," Spencer said.
Weeroona Bay coach Russell Sawford said that he wasn't too disappointed with the loss and things can only get better from here.
He said there were some good signs for the club, with Woolatt having a stand out performance in his 150th game for the Bays, and youngster Ferguson having a good game in the back pocket.
In a disappointing loss, Woollatt, Ferguson, Kilpatrick and Ellis featured in Weeroona Bay's best players, with Carrigan kicking three goals.
Going from one difficult game to another, Weeroona Bay will now face up against reigning premiers Centrals, with Norths to face a new look South Whyalla next week.
