Pre-season football competition kicks off Saturday
Thursday, 13 March 2003
A late cancellation by Roxby Downs has meant Quorn/Willsden will face Weeroona Bay in the first round of this weekend's pre-season Augusta Power Stations Cup.
While the Whyalla side has confirmed it will play the first round of the competition, it is unsure at this stage whether or not it will take part in the second round, leaving West Augusta without a confirmed competitor in the second round.
However, Port Augusta Football League president Ken McLean is confident a team will be found for the second round if Weeroona Bay is unavailable.
However, this would leave the present scoring system for the cup in disarray and Mr McLean said, "it is something we're going to have to grapple with".
The winner of the competition is normally decided on the team with the best overall percentage from its two matches.
The first round of the two-round competition kicks off on Saturday, with a double-header at Central Oval.
Central Augusta will meet West Augusta for the first match at 12 noon, with South Augusta then lining up against Solomontown at 2pm.
Quorn/Willsden was due to travel to Roxby Downs to play a combined Woomera and Districts Football League side, but a late cancellation due to the team not being able to field enough players, has meant it will now play the Whyalla side on Saturday at 2pm in Whyalla.
The second round of the competition will be held over two days, with Solomontown playing Central Augusta in Port Pirie on Saturday, March 22 at 1pm, and Quorn/Willsden taking to the field against South Augusta at 12noon at Central Oval on Sunday,March 23.
This was due to be a double header with West Augusta to play Roxby Downs, but no match has been confirmed at this stage.
