South storms home in final quarter

South 11.15 (81) d West 8.12 (60)
A seven-goal finish by South, which had trailed all day and was down by nine-points at the last change, resulted in a win to the Bulldogs to start off the season proper.
South stormed home, with Colson finding form and South dominating the centre.
In its last quarter dash, South went on to defeat West by 19 points,
Seven goals were scored in the last quarter by South after it only managed four for three quarters.
West looked to be in control for most of the game, but its young brigade faltered after three-quarter time.
Some of its senior players also did not contribute much during the game.
Umpires were Barker and Zubrinich.
West kicked with a slight breeze.
It was a scrappy opening few minutes before Woodforde scored the first goal for West five minutes in.
Page was freed and his shot split the centre.
South's first score was a behind at the 19-minute mark.
Both sides were making plenty of mistakes and the wind was getting stronger.
West was playing better footy and was rewarded by Stapleton's two goals to give it a 25-point lead at quarter time.
Early in the term West was doing most of the attacking.
South goaled through Reid for its first major.
It was not pretty football, but the endeavor was evident.
South was starting to gel but a timely goal to West gave it a 17-point lead.
The third term was a real tussle and South's experienced players were doing more.
Good play by Wilton, to Reid, to Waterworth ended with two flags.
West wasted opportunities with some average shooting for goal.
South forced the ball forward and Anson Wilton swooped up the crumbs and goaled at the 20-minute mark to reduce the lead to five points.
But West replied to kick a six-pointer.
West was shaky, sitting on a nine-point advantage at three-quarter time.
Winning the centre and dominating around the ground, South took control to rain goals.
Two 50m penalties did not help West's cause.
Colson was the focal point with four goals for the game.
South appears to be a sleeper with a few good players not available yet.
West will get better and its young brigade need more support from the senior group.
South ran out winners by 21 points.
