Football write up & draw for April 4 & 5
Friday, 4 April 2003
Friday under lights is the match the Proprietary-Risdon Lions have been waiting for the 2002 grand final reply against reigning premiers Port.
Since that game, Lions have a new coach, ex-AFL and SANFL star John Fidge who had a short career with tomorrow nights opponent Port.
He will ask his players for a special effort in his SGL coaching debut against his old side.
In the off season Lions lost brilliant playmakers Paul Sadler and Elijah Ware (best player in the 2002 grand final) to higher representative honors and Brodie Lavis through long term injury and their replacements might need time to settle into the side.
The question needs to be asked has Lions recruiting efforts been strong enough to cover these losses?
A first up match against a strong Port team will test them and the answer will be known early into the game.
They still have reliable players, Mark Aldridge, Adam Gordon and Mick Horsnell and returning recruits Adam Ryan and Daniel Seidel will add strength to the team.
Utility Mark Congdon returning from injury will be like a new recruit for his team and much is expected from juniors coming up Levi Goodridge, Chris Marslen and Kane Wallace.
The quiet word from the Lions rooms is they are confident they will have a solid season and their aim is to take the next step at the end of the season.
Added incentive is their 10th anniversary celebrations and there will be no better way to start than a first up win.
Winning form though is good form!
Port will improve following their high scoring win against Solomontown.
Bob Boston has a good blend of senior players and experienced junior players to work with. He did not have a passenger in his team last week.
New player James Chapman looks a solid type and when he adapts to the pace and rugged play of SGL football will be a good player for the Port team.
Youngsters Matt Bateson, Seth Roberts, Tom Clarke and Brady Puddy provided youthful enthusiasm all around the ground and with support from Damien Mellow, Ben Luteria and Matthew Cox, the Bulldogs has strength on every line and play a hard at the ball game.
With no injuries from last week, Port will have a full list to select their side.
Both clubs invite all members and supporters back to their social clubs after the game to share success with their players.
Port, after having a game under their belt, should win.
Lions will start strongly and take the scoring up to their opponents in the first half but may just lack hard match fitness in the end.
Tip: Port by 22 points
