Wolves annihilate Central
Friday, 4 April 2003
Wolves 22.18 (150) d Central 6.7 (43)
Wolves set the standard with an impressive display to annihilate Central in the opening round at Central Oval on Saturday.
With plenty of pace, Jared Reid, with five goals, Chris Warren, five, Alan Bradle, three, Ian Brown, two, and Ricky Cox, two, Wolves got plenty of chances to kick a big score.
Although outclassed, Central will be improvers due to the advent of Ron Waters into what was an ordinary forward division.
Wolves wasted many opportunities with inaccurate goal shooting.
It had six minor scores before the first major was scored at the 19-minute mark.
Central, through James Boles, snapped a goal at the 22-minute mark.
A nice handpass to Ryan Struck and he slotted another major for Wolves and they led at the first change by 20-points.
Wolves outscored the Bloods five goals, three behinds to two goals, three behinds in probably the evenest quarter for the game.
Wolves' pace was causing heaps of problems.
Their defence was setting up good attacking moves as they broke up Central sorties into their forward lines.
New recruit Ron Waters was starting to have some influence with his marking and strong play.
Wolves led by 38 points at the half-way mark.
Wolves upped the anti with a nine-goal quarter, shutting down the Bloods in most parts of the ground and continuing their pace blitz.
Goals were being scored with ease.
To Central's credit it plugged away to kick three majors.
But not enough Bloods players were able to cope with the onslaught.
It was a 72-point lead to Wolves at the three-quarter time break.
Central scored only two points in the last quarter while Wolves scored another five goals.
Poor disposal by Central into the forward area let the Wolves defenders mop up and set up positive attacks.
Wolves will be a force again on this form and certainly will be around finals time if they continue in this vein.
Central needs to improve in the skills department and look for a bit more pace around the ground if it is going to be a contender this season.
Wolves were victors by 107 points, which is a great percentage builder.
