Eagles ruffle feathers

UNITED Yeelanna gave the 2002 Great Flinders Football League premiers an 11 goal start by half time and nearly ran them down to come up short by 27 points at the Cummins oval.
The Magpies looked every bit of the classy side they are on paper.
Aided by the use of the breeze in the first quarter they set up a handy four-goal lead. Centre square players Scott Blacker, Ashley Fahey and wingman Shaun Wait where in ominous form as they collected possessions continuously and drove the ball goal wards.
Young Braden Fitzgerald having a rare match home from college slipped under the Eagles gaze and posted two fine goals.
Joel Fitzgerald and Eugene Wauchope took marks under pressure and also goaled.
While Ramblers appeared to be coasting with most of their work looking cleaner and crisper they were unable to make greater inroads.
Eagles coach Viv Coulthard, with assistance from young Ty Habner and Matt Haylock made the Magpies work hard to gain the results.
The second quarter saw Ramblers absolutely destroy the Eagles.
They may have needed the first quarter to settle down as they drew breath and set about the task of winning the football match.
A mass of black and white jumpers attacked the ball and body like bees swarming around a hive as they worked furiously to gain possession.
The mid fielders provided the impetus and were led by Adam Richardson who by hand or foot delivered to a team mate usually in the clear and in a better position. Tyson Wait and Simon Pedler were solid in defence and repelled any stray Eagle sortie forward.
Braden Fitzgerald again slipped through the Eagle defence and with cool aplomb kicked another three goals.
The Eagles' Aaron Bilney, Nigel Habner and Joel Kay provided some resistance but they were swamped by the Magpies, who had 98 possessions to the Eagles 44.
They had an 11-goal lead at half time and the match won.
To the Eagles credit they were not fazed and came out and addressed the issue in no uncertain manner.
Hesitancy was replaced by assurity; individual efforts replaced with team work; doubt replaced with confidence.
They applied pressure to the Magpies and they in turn wilted and became observers.
Reece Modra booted three goals, Damien Little provided some run; Clint Bradford took on the heavy work around the packs and assumed control.
The losses of Adam Richardson in particular and Scott Mickan did not help the Magpie cause.
The Eagles with 83 possessions to Ramblers 41 indicated the difference; Ramblers unable to goal with the breeze and the Eagles scored five against.
The Eagles had shown that they could match the Magpies and that the game could be won.
The last quarter was a battle.
The Eagles were unable to bridge the gap. They won the quarter, but the start was to large to overcome.
United Yeelanna were tremendous in their comeback. Many new faces and young ones at that will have given coach Viv Coulthard something to smile about and to be able to work with.
Ramblers showed that they still have the class and power to be number one again.
Best on ground with a polished performance was new recruit Simon Pedler who either in defence early in the match and when called into the ruck played strongly.
Aaron Bilney was excellent for the Eagles as he was in great touch across half back. Shaun Wait on his wing picked up 30 touches to be the leading possession gatherer on the ground.
Other Ramblers to play well were Scott Blacker from the centre; Braden Fitzgerald for five goals; Tyson Wait was solid and reliable across the back lines; Eugene Wauchope was a target at centre half forward; Ashley Fahey was another who also gave a consistent effort all day and Adam Richardson who was easily the best player on the ground in the first half whose vision, coolness and disposal was the architect of the Magpies second quarter assault.
For the Eagles Ty Habner tried hard all day and ran and supported his team mates.
Joel Kay is a classy player with a great future, but unfortunately college studies will rule him out for the Eagles in the majority.
Other good players were Matt Haylock, Clint Bradford, Damien Little and Dwayne Loller in the ruck.
