Cougars tame the Roos
CUMMINS Kapinnie recorded a 14-point win over Lock at the Lock oval before an excellent crowd in attendance.
The game was free flowing, high scoring with constant attack.
Cougars were aided by the breeze in the first term and took full use of the advantage.
Zeb Kenny was in superb touch in the middle of the ground as he was continually finding the ball and he made the position his for the day.
Jed Siegert at centre half forward was providing an avenue to goal and the red and blacks prospered.
Lock applied the pressure and tried to work forward with the emphasis on finding Gus Glover at the goal front.
But Cougars were resilient in defence with Tom Phelps and Craig Meaney able to withstand the Roo attacks.
The Roos were playing indirect football while Cougars went directly through the middle.
The second quarter saw Cougars again stand tall by refusing to submit to the Roos. Roger Puckridge defended stoutly and Corey Turnbull was providing drive from around the packs.
The Roos Matt Mellor and Julian Doudle worked well on the ball and provided stiff opposition but they were unable to crack the Cougar defences.
Cougars missed three set shots for goal that could have seen a chasm develop between the sides.
Gus Glover kicked two goals for the Roos but it was still Cougars who were making the play.
The last half was a continuance of the first, with Cougars always having the answers.
Coach Tom Phelps showed his charges how it is done, with a tremendous 100 metre dash down the middle of the ground to goal.
Another inspirational play was the run down of John Beard by Roger Puckridge to really lift the confidence of the Cougar team.
Early in the last quarter Gus Glover missed a shot for goal from 15 metres which proved to be very costly.
The Roos kept at Cougars and eventually hit the lead with five minutes to go.
This galvanised Cougars into action again and they responded to kick two goals to draw away and record an unexpected victory over last year's grand finalist.
Best on ground was Cougars centre half forward Jed Siegert who kicked four goals and was instrumental in providing an avenue of attack for his team mates.
Coach Tom Phelps led his side superbly and also kicked four goals.
The Roos' Gus Glover with a haul of eight goals six was in superb touch once again but his unusual inaccuracy proved telling in the final result.
An excellent first up win for Cougars sets them on the road with a lot of confidence. The Roos will learn from the loss and will greatly improve with the return of coach Britt Grocke (who was unavailable/absent) and Craig Wheare.
