Departures bite Bulldogs
Wednesday, 12 March 2003
There's been a clean out of the Barossa District kennel.
An extended departure list is headed by three-year coach Steve Lubcke, who has been replaced by last year's import coup Brenton Daniel.
Daniel undertakes his first coaching assignment with a depleted list, with several key players leaving the Bulldogs after an encouraging performance in 2002.
Among those sitting in Barossa's out tray are last year's best and fairest Matt Harris, Morgan Heggie, Steven Baraglia, Derek Sansbury, Matt Stelzer and Wayne Rosenboom.
The losses come at an inopportune time for the Bulldogs, who were gaining momentum after struggling in recent years.
Barossa posted five wins, and despite finishing second to bottom, had several other opportunities to claim victory but fell at the final hurdle when it came to the crunch.
One of the most positive aspects in the Barossa resurgence has been juniors making the step up into senior ranks.
Darren Sharp has proven himself a class act in A Grade, as well as the likes of Tom Dennis, Greg Rowley and Kieren Jenkins, showing they have want it takes to have a major impact on the Barossa, Light and Gawler Football Association.
Daniel said he has enjoyed the initial foray into the coaching arena, and is backed by experienced Bulldog Adam Grovermann, who has taken on the role as playing Reserves coach.
"The young blokes are keen. There are positions there for the young blokes if they want to stand up and take over," Daniel said.
"We have lost three or four of our top players and there are now opportunities at the footy club for them to step up and become leaders."
Daniel himself will have to step up his role through the midfield, and with the likes of Ricky Wilkin, Simon Wills, Ryan Hales, Ryan Fromm and Michael Baraglia, should have the talent to remain competitive.
Strong marking ruckman Cory Hodgson will also return, while Aaron Wilkin is set to make a comeback after suffering a cheek injury last season.
Youngsters Matt Lawrie and Matt Bitter are progressing into senior ranks and are hoped to successfully join their older counterparts.
